MAIL VAN ROBBED.

VALUABLE PACKAGES DIS APPEAR.

A most daring mail van robbery, involving an unknown -but -certainly a large amount in diamonds and cheques, occurred in Hatton Harden, the diamond centra of the world. A contractor’s van called at tba .post office, where a postman took the bags containing registered letters and packages and placed them in the van, Which was then, driven to, Smitlifield post office. Here ,a postman signed for a. further consignment and returned to the street, where he was astounded to find that the van and the, driver had disappeared. The police stations throughout London were immediately warned, and the whole force, is on the look-out. The van was subsequently found in a quiet street' off Goswell Eoadi with the mail bags gone. It has been ascertained that the mail bags were transferred to a private car, which drove off rapulThe packages represented practically the whole of the week-end correspondence of Hatton Garden. The usual practice of the Hatton 'Garden, meichants is to dispatch stones 'of great value at the week-end. The Daily Express says the, estimated value of the mail bags is at least £80,000,, The police were scouring London up to late last night for the driver, of the van, who secured that post in recognition of his services during the general strike.
