MOKOIA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

LECTURE. In response' to a request by the president of the Settlers Association, Dr. McGliie, of Haiivera, lias kindly consented to deliver a lecture on his recent tour abroad and in the Homeland. The lecture will be l given on a date to be .fixed about the middle of next- month, and should prove both interesting and instructive. It is intended to have a. short vocal programme prior to the lecture and, as the proceeds will be devoted to augment the local hall funds, a large audience is expected. PUBLIC HALL. At a meeting of the hall committee Messrs. R. A. Richter and H. H. Legge were appointed to- fill the vacancies caused by the resignations of Messrs D. Wards -and T. Magan, junior, w,ho have left the district. Mr. Wards was chairman of the committee and was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for the interest- and work he bad rendered on behalf of the hall. Mr S. J. Tidswell was appointed chairman for the remainder of the term. .FARMING NOTES. ’.Hie milking season is now in full swing and on most farms the herds are nearing completion as. regards number of oows. Owing to the mild and open winter, stock generally came in in good condition,, but the past few weeks have been very trying and retarding to high production. The grass is now coming on fairly well and if cold winds would: take' a spell tilings' in general would be much better. The local factory shows an increase in manufacture of cheese compared with -last year, and this is owing in great measure to a better provision of supplementary feed than was the ease- last season. Several showers of hail and snow fell here on Thursday and as a consequence there- was a, considerable drop in the supply at the factory next morning. TENNIS CLUB.

• At- the annual meeting of the local tennis club a fair number of members were present, Mrs A. T. Main, president, in the chair. Mrs. A. Tid-s----well, secretary, submitted a very favourable report and balance sheet for the past year, showing the club to be in a healthy condition. The following new' members were nominated and admitted: Mr; and Mrs. Smith, Messrs. K. Forbes, X. Quinn, John Lee. Arthur Guild. The annual subscription was fixed' same as last year: —Gents, 10s; Ladies, ss; nonplayers, 2s 6d. It was decided to open the courts for play on the first- Wednesday in November. The meeting 1 closed with a vote of thanks to Mr. and Mrs. D. J. Richardson for use of grounds, and to the chair. CHILDREN’S FANCY DRESS BALL On Friday evening a most successful fancy dress ball was held in the hall, when, with great enthusiasm and gjlee, most of the children in the district turned out in fancy dress. Many of the characters represented were portrayed particularly we’ll, and the parents and others responsible must have devoted much time and considered thought to produce the various creations. The display of fancy and original dresses would compare , fayouraply with a- much larger centre than Mokoia., and the judges confessed to being up against a hard proposition in giving their awards. Mrs. Smith and Mr. S. J. Tidswell acted as directors of ceremonies, and the ball was set going by the eldest girl and boy leading off, in the grand

march. The ladies’ committee is responsible for the' function and it deserves all praise for the way .arrange-, j meats were made and for the delight- ' ful programme submitted. Mrs. Champion and Misses Venables and Moore acted as judges and awarded the prizes as follows, their judgments being very satisfactory to all: Girls over seven —Ivy Stevenson, 1 Eastern princess. , , Boys over seven —John Quinn, ,• king’s jester.
