A “HEALTH WEEK.”

BOROUGH COUNCIL TAKES NO ACTION.

A special repox-t suggesting that a “healtii ’ week” * scheme should be adopted was submitted to the Hawera Borough. Council last evening by the nealth inspector, Mix F. G..Ccueman. On the recommendation of the general committee it was decided to take no action.

“I have been considering the matter of bringing before youz* council the question of the organising of a ‘Health Week’ for this, borough,” l-eported the inspector, “and in connection with same have written away for information; but as this has not come to hand, and the time is drawing in, it is necessary that the- matter should be brought forward if anything is to be done this year. The movement was originally organised in London and other parts of England by a committee of enthusiasts, .and was eventually taken up by the Royal Sanitary Institute and is now under the patronage ot\ His Majesty the King. It is proposed to hold it this year in the week October 3-9. The objects of the movement are to focus intensely the interest of the community on the subject of public health in all its varied aspects. The means of attaining this object would be the organisation of a committee from the council and other bodies of individuals interested, this committee to arrange for demonstrations of sanitary appliances, foods, clothing', etc. (in* this*case by window displays), ldr lectures on health by medical men and by those, interested in music in its effect- on health, by special sermons in the churches, by talks to the School children 'and by organising essay and sketch competitions among them on the subject, and any other means which may suggest itself. Towards the end of the week a general clean-up or the borough might be organised by the council. The finance of the movement is usually a voluntary effort by those interested, and the matter can be forwarded by business firms donating advertising space, in the local press or themselves advertising in a. persqnal or impersonal manner the aspect- of health as connected with their special industry.” .
