TAXATION RETURNS.
COMPANY’S APPEAL AGAINST CONVICTION. (BY TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 21. The Od.lin Timber Company’s appeal against its conviction by Mr Page, S.M., of makings false .income tax returns was continued to-day. Perry Cutforth, an inspector of the Taxation Department, gave- evidence similar to that given at the original hearing of the case. When, he interviewed Mr Odilin, the latter said he wanted to strengthen the finances of the company. His policy was to conserve the profits so that the company would, be in a strong position if it met hard times. He suggested: that profits were still in the business, and that when the shareholders got thlemi the department would get the. tax. In reply to Sir John Find,lay, witness said that the company’s bboks are well kept and that a qualified man would be able to trace the- various items. There was no evidence of tampering with the books in a criminal way. The witness .also admitted that -there 1 was no .lack of frankness about Mr Odlin. The case is proceeding.
