UNPOPULAR DICTATOR
HIS REMOVAL WANTED.
AFFAIRS IN SFAIN. ANGRY ARMY OFFICERS. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. LONDON, Scut. 20. The Daily Chronicle’s correspondent in Madrid, Mr. Martin Donolioe, states that on Sunday a garrison of 20,000 was closelv confined to barracks, each regiment ‘having a company under arms ready for any emergency. The infantry officers are angry at the severe imprisonment inflicted on the artillerv officers, and insist upon general Rivera’s resignation. They favour a dictatorship, but not under General De Rivera. King Alfonso is in a quandary. A meeting of the Council is t;> be held to-day at San Sebastian, with the King'-presiding, and the infantry officers have decided to await the Council’s decision. If General de Rivera decides to stay he will probably have to face a serious army revolt which will drive him out of power, alive or otherwise. The King is said to be .seeking the advice of prominent men outside the circle of the Directory.
