FORTY-FIVE YEARS AGO.

A meeting of the Early Closing Association was. held last night, and 1 a resolution was passed- in favour of closing at 6 p.m. except Saturdays. A meeting of 'householders to elect a school committee was l held at Manaia on Saturday, and the following were elected): Messrs W. L. Martyn, J. C. Yorke, D. Hughes, M. O’Brien, JR. Dingle, G. Glenn and J. Mitchell. A resolution was carried 1 to the effect thaXi Blocks X to VilX (inclusive) of the Waimate Survey District, be declared the school district. An exciting day Is sport was experienced' by a party of stockriders of the Waimate Plains on Saturday in rounding up a mob of 70 horses recently bought from the Maoris by Messrs IV. L. Martyn and H. Bayley. Many of the animals hadl never been, handled before, and some which were five and six years old fought with hoof and tooth most desperately when yarded. An injury was sustained by Mr MctL’Dowie, whose arm was seized 1 by an entire horse and 1 .severely bit-ten, and the jaws of the horse had! to be prised open with ai roping pole before the arm could be released.
