SOUTH AFRICAN FLAG

INCLUDING A CROWN.

NATIONALIST POINT OF VIEW. THE PROPOSED REFERENDUM. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received 11.25 a.m. to-day. CAPETOWN, Sept. 20. Mr Milan, Minister of Interior, in an interview, said that the flag referendum would certainly require an absolute majority. The result would not affect the position of the Government if it went against the Government, which would not raise the question again. Referring to the proposal to include a crown, he said lie did not think it would be received with enthusiasm by his -people, .though there was no reason to believe it would not he acceptable in the present circumstances from a constitutional point of view. There was nothing wrong with a crown being part of the South African constitution; neither was it contrary to the Nationalists’ constitution, which recognised the existing relations with the United Kingdom. There was no grievance against a crown as such, and he thought it would make the bridge upon, which South Africans of all parties could -meet. It is stated that the Labour Party approves of the referendum.
