G. Kells, New Zealand’s cross-coun-try champion, is. one. of the few youths who have, not ruined an athletic career full of promise by. forsaking tJie track as they leave school (says the N.Z. Herald). From the day six years ago when Kells, then 13 years old, won the one mile handicap and was, second in the half-mile at Carlaw Park, running barefooted, he has made rapid progress. In the same year lie secured his first Auckland championship place, when he finished third in the three miles at Carlaw Park. He also set new Technical College records for 440yds, 880yds, and one mile, his time for the last mentioned; distance being 4min 49 sec. A year previously Kells was the 880yds and one mile Auckland primary schools champion Last year Kells filled third places in the one. and three miles Auckland championships. The most remarkable feature of Kells’ athletic .career is the fact that he has won the Dominion cross-country championship in his first steeplechase season. Last Saturday wqelc he was second to T. M.
