TARANAKI CHAMPIONS

PRESENTATIONS AT AUROA

A very important and interesting event in the Soccer world of Taranaki was consummated last might, when, at Auroa, in the presense of a .large company of residents of the -district ana visitors from other places, the cups and medals won during the 1926 season were presented to the winners, the Auroa Club teams, by Mr W. Adams, president of the- Association. A social, at which there was an enjoyable programme, and a dance formed a nttimg function tb colob-ra&te tho wina.-TLp of tli>a season. ._\ ■ ■ . Mr J. W. Bradford! presided, and: in a few appropriate remarks, introduced Mr Adams and askedi him to perform the ceremony of presenting the trophies. . ;/■■■- Sir Adams, after expressing Ins pleasure at being present, congratulated Auroa Club on the success achieved. .He said that for some years Auroa had sacrificed its' chances or winning by running two .senior teams, which wfts an advantage to the game and gave better results actually, but did not allow the teams to show to the advantage they might otherwise have done. This year j*m alteration had been made, and the result was quite pronounced.- He then presented the Jiddam Cup to Mr W. McCook, -vice-captain, in the absence of the captain, Mr Freakley,, He added t-h-fit this was the first year the association had -been in a position to present medals to the individual players, and he hoped members would treasure them for their • association rather than for their intrinsic value. The medals were then presented by hato to the team a-s follows: —Messrs Freakley, McCook, Brown. Rye, Jackson, H. and J. Hartley, M. and W. H. Bradford, R. Can glands, T. Kilpatrick, and A. Ramsay. ...... Mr Adams then referred to the junior cup, won by Auroa, saying that it would be a 'matter of interest to learn that this cup had-'been given by Messrs Skeates and Bockheart way hack in 1906. and had been won in that year by Hawera, and in 1909 by Kaponga (unbeaten 'record.). B*y a coincidence the cup had been put away for about twenty years, -and this year it was agftin. secured for competition. Only -two teams had competed, but four were promised for next year. He then handed the cup to Air C. Salt, captain of the Auroa team.

Mr Bradford said he hoped that Soccer would continue to go ahead by -lerfps and bounds. He heartily thanked Mr Adams for coming out to Auroa, the ladies for their valued’ amdl generous assistance, remarking that to. the latter the club largely owed' its strong financial position. Advantage was also taken by the president to acknowledge for the ha-ll committee the help given by Air Austin for so kindly providing music at hall functions, arid he presented him, on behalf o'f different societies, With an ac-cord-eon. The winners of the points prizes for the euchre tournaments were: —Ladies, Airs Crewe; gentlemen, Mr C. Rye, and they were presented respectively 'with two handsome pieces of china and a silver cigarette case. '■ During the evening musical! items wer-e provided as under: —Songs (two) by Mr T. E. Coleman, and Hawaiian solo duet and trio by the Elkingfcon party. All were much appreciated. Excellent, dance music was. provided by Air K. Sharp’s orchestra, and extras were played by several of the visitors and local residents. Mr W. Martin was an cff'.'dcnb M.G.

Mr 11. Roberts, as bon. secretary, acting in conjunction with liis committees, ladies and gentlemen, had all arrangements effectively made, and the •result of the combined effort® was a huge success. Special credit'ls duo to members of the club for the artistic decorations, which, with the brilliant lighting -made the hall look very gay and pretty. Everyone present—and the hall wa-s full—had a right good time. .
