INTERNATIONAL LABOUR
CONFERENCE A FAILURE.
SAYS AUSTRALIAN DELEGATE
LOWER STANDARDS ADOPTED
BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received 10.40 a.m. to-day. SYDNEY, Sent, IS. ' Air.- Beasley,, the Australian trade union representative at- the Geneva Labour Conference,, on his return, to Australia said that the conference was, in many respects, a- failure. There was a tendency to make seamen’s conditions worse instead of improving them. Instead of doing the work’ it was appointed to do, the Conference appeared to do the direct opposite; instead of lifting the weaker countries of the world towards the . same social status as the more advanced countries, the latter were, being forced to adopt lower standards.
Mr. Beasley was disappointed with the calibre of the Labour representatives he met during Ills travels, loth British and foreign. s He thinks they lack initiative, foresight, and: enthusiasm for the cause of the workers.
