Mr. and Mrs. E. Iv. Cameron left Hawera by car this morning for Gisborne, and will be absent for about - ten days. .
Mr H. B. Gibson was a passenger by tq-day’s mail train to Wellington, where he will spend a few days engaged on business. . .
Mrs. R.. J. Nairn, of Elthiam, who has been receiving treatment at the Hawera Hospital during the ip&st two months, is reported to have niade.goodi progress and returned to her home this morning.
Mr. J. W. Toplis, or the firm of Messrs Burroughs, Wellcome and Co. (Australia), Ltd., is at present staying for a few days in Hawera. and is a guest at the Coritmercial Hotel. Mr. Toplis only reoently arrived in New Zealand from Australia on his first visit to the. Dominion for over 20 years. The resignation of Sir. J; G. Nichol, owing to his leaving the district was last'night accepted by the general committee of the Hawera Trotting Club. A resolution was passed placing on record the appreciation felt by the club of the sendees performed by iMr, Nichol as a member of the club. He had for a number of years taken., a keen interest in the sport in Hawera, and for many years held the position of honorary clerk or scales.
Messrs S. F„ Reid and Win. McKenzie were discharged! from the Hawera Hospital to : d'ay. The former has just recovered -from, .injuries received as ,au .result of an (accident at' the .Ta- . whiti dairy factory, while the latter, wlio had been in hospital for an operation, was quite recovered/ / . . Mr A. D. Connell, architect, who won! the Royal Institute of British Architects’ Rome Scholarship for 1926, is a passenger by the lonic, which will arrive in Wellington on Thursday next. Mr Connell is a son of Mr and Mrs N. D. Connell, of Eltham.—Ar,gus.
. Mr. George Paul, junr., of Auckland, was appointed handieapper to the Ha-., we fa Trotting Club at the monthly meeting of the general committee held last evening Mi*. Paul is‘a New Zealander by birth and served with the New Zealand forces during the war. He is a member of a well-known Auckland family which has been connected with the sport- of trotting for a number of years, ' ; -
Mr H. V. Squire, who has within the last few days severed a long connection with the firm of Messrs Blair and Sellar, of Hawera, left this morning for Wellington to take up his new duties as hardware salesman for the Vacuum Oil Company. Prior to his leaving the firm, Mr Squire was met by* the staff and was made the recipient of a handsome suitcase suitably inscribed. In making the presentation, Mr A. Blair spoke of the long and faithful service given by Mr Squire and. tendered his best wishes. Mr Squire suitably' - responded.
