BOBBY CALVES.

(To the Editor.) r , lr >~A s . y° Ur correspondent ‘ ‘Simple Unv toclne” has challenged my statement re the above question, I would ask leave to reply briefly. First, he ■says do 1 expect any reasonable-minded adult to treat the question of the calx ' a i^ s J ° 4r-' as f ac t- It is extremely difficult to find reason in some adults at times. However, I ask your correspondent to accept it as a fact; furtl I*’ 1 *’ met a man the other day who substantiated my statement with the same experience, and your Ok aiaw a correspondent .also bears the question out with experience. And if “Simple Cow Coelde” does not now view it as a fact, well, 1 would suggest he has selected the only nom-de-plume possible. -1 have reared calves of nil breeds, sizes, temperaments and condition, from numbers of six to ninetysix, and 1 fail to see where the charge of undue cruelty comes in. A calf can, and does, stand a lot more than lambs and fat pigs, etc. Why not all this hullaballoo about those? As loiijr as correspondents hide behind pen-names to throw mud ht a new venture, so long will the public imagine that somebody (and not the calf) is getting hurt and squeezed out of business or out of a job It has also been stated that this unheard-of brutality is all for the magnificent sum of Is’ 6d—that is, above the price we are receiving for the hides. Mow, this calf stunt is a new venture, supposing Patea. make such a success that they can offer the farmer, say, 10s per calf, or a difference of 6s 6d, what of it then? I can imagine all the soft-hearted expounders wishing they had a few calves to go, or else sneering that the cookie is getting too much; and I state emphatically that no person other than a “Simple Cow Cookie” would turn the proposal down. Patea, freezing -works are to he congratulated on their enterprise, and “may tire scheme prove successful” is the earnest wish of every EXPERIENCED FARMER. Hawera.
