BOULOGNE SPEEDWAY.
PARTICULARS OF THE TRAGEDY.
A correspondent in the Referee supplies the following details of the recent tragedy at. Boulogne, in which a wellknown driver was killed and the famous Segrave had a lucky escape. He says:—
Captain Howcv, in the kilometre flying start hill test, preceded Major 6cgrave and Parry Thomas, who -were due to follow- at 'intervals of a minute. Howcy’s car took a sharp bend at 100 m.p.h. After trying vainly to check his speed, he seemed to lose control, and the car, touching a smaller one belonging to a spectator, lurched and crashed into the spectators.. One onlooker was killed instantly.
Segrave was waiting at the startingpost, listening to the timekeeper ticking off the seconds till the sixty would elapse, and lie would start. Suddenly a telephonist received a message, and, shouting, "Stop, for God’s sake! The car ahead has crashed,’ ’ he just prevented Segrave from starting and dashing into the smashed car of Howey. .Mrs Segrave was waiting at the top of the hill expecting her husband to arrive and be killed in the inevitable smash.
