THE PETROL TAX.

Strong exception to anything in the nature of a petrol tax was taken by Air H Filmer, chairman of the Wellington Automobile Club, at its monthly meeting last week. He urged members to oppose such a tax. “A petrol tax/’ he declared, would be highly dangerous and a simple one for needy Finance Ministers to tinker with, as by placing an additional penny or halfpenny per gallon on petrol the Government probably would collect an extra £10,000.” . Air Filmer added that motorists m New' Zealand were now not too badly treated in comparison with those _ m other parts of the world. It was claimed that the petrol tax was the more equitable, but the tyre tax was quite as equitable, and there were no exemp* tions.
