A town clock which erratically goes back on its job shakes the orderliness of the whole business community. The best of town clocks, however, have their misaclventui'es, the occurrence of which reflects in no respect uponi the timepieces’ accuracy. The Hawera Post Office clock ‘‘went democratic” on the townspeople of the borough last evening, yet it is.in every way . the staunch assembly of wheels and' springs which has faultlessly marked the day’s intervals for 25 years. The mechanism is sound. Th© cause of the trouble arose from a worm-eaten casing containing the works. This being brought to the attention of the proper authorities—the Borough Council (not the Post Office) —the Mayor despatched a carpenter to remove the decayed! timber and put matters to rights. In the course of the renovation dust fram the worm-eaten parts of the casing and 1 a chip of wood inadvertently found their way into the instrument’s inner workings, and were responsible for the temporary derangement of the official domarkation of Hawera’s hours, minutes and seconds.
