A HOAX.
EARL KITCHENER STORY.
HOME OFFICE INVESTIGATIONS.
SY CABLE —PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT LONDON, Sept. 9. The Home Office has ended the Earl Kitchener hoax with an official statement to the effect that exhaustive inquiries have conclusively established the fact that the coffin in which it was alleged a body had been brought from Norway which was thought to be that of Earl Kitchener, had never left England. The authorities had -been able to trace it to Newcastle, where it was stored until sent to London, allegedly containing Earl Kitchener’s remains. They vouch for the fact that it had not been tampered with in any respect. Furthermore, the Norwegian authorities gave no permission to anybody to open any grave in their territory. The public may therefore be satisfied that the entire statements made by Mr Power are without foundation. ,
The official statement adds that Mr Power elaborately staged a mock funeral in Norway for film purposes.
