THE CHURCH AND REFORM.
(To the Editor.) . Sir, —Will you allow me space in your columns to have a shot at this “Veritas,” who tries to tell us that the Church has not initiated any great reforms. in recent years. Might I remind him that the prohibition movement is a latter day reform that the Church is fighting for? And when wo have .put this great reform on the statute book, we may begin the great anti-smoking reform; but one thing at a time is enough for any church, or churches. He says he does not call to mind one great issue, on which the churches have been even reasonably unanimous, unless it was in support of the recent war. Well, did we not win the war? Which is clear proof that God was on our side. This I can prove. At,the beginning of the Great War the German Empress, in addressing the mothers of. Germany, said there was no doubt that 'Germany would win, because if she did not win, nobody would any longer believe in God. So, with this great threat ringing in His ears, God 'allowed the- victory to go to the Allies. Could anything be clearer than that the churches were right in supporting .the war? I admit we have ben beaten If or. the l.im6 being with, our Religious Exercises in State Schools .Bill, but probably that is because it is not right for tho State to interfere in religious matters. In conclusion, might I remind “Veritas” that . There is a fountain filled with blood Drawn from Emanuel’s veins, i And sinners plunged beneath that flood Lose all their guilty stains. If “Veritas” will only come and be washed in the precious blood of the Lamb, he may then become another helper in the great reforms of the Church.—l am, etc., MOSEg. ■ Manaia, 6th Sept.
