DIFFICULT RESCUE WORK
SENSATIONAL ACCIDENT NEAR
MANGAWEKA
(BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) TAHIAPE; Sept. 1. Further particulars have, been gained of the sensational accident which occurred on tliei Rangiwahia Road, four miles from Mangaweka. last night, when a, motor car driven by Constable Grant, containing Mrs. Grant, and George. McDonald, skidded through a road railing and went over the side .of a gorge, a drop of two hundred feet. The occupants were pinned under the ear in water for two hours before their plight was discovered*. The rescue party had to cat a path, through the bush to reach the car, which was chopped to pieces in order to release the occupants, who were hauled up the newly cut path in .stretchers by means of a rope for two hundred, yards. Dr Davis, a lady medical practitioner, Tendered wonderful service to the injured, who were- taken by ambulance to the Taihape Hospital, 22 miles away.. McDonald was injured in the head and shoulders. Hei was* operated on. but his condition is very critical, Constable Grant received serious injuries to his head and legs. There is a prospect of his recovery. Mrs. Grant received injuries to her legs and back, and is in a, semi-conscious* condition. -Concussion is feared. It took four hours to effect a rescue., It was pitch dark and rain was falling. How the .party escaped! being dashed to pieces is a miracle.
