BOWLING CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING.
The second annual meeting of members of tthei a-bovo cliib was 'IlcM. in the Town Hall last evening. Mr A. E. Anderson, the retiring president, occupied the chair. The president, in his annual report, stated that during the .year the dub s overdraft had been reduced from £.361 4s 3d to £93 2s 9d. This satisfactory result, mainly, was due tq the success attending the queen carnival, the nett proceeds of which amounted to £325 14s 9d. Tlie sum collected in subscriptions from 26 members was £76 13s, being more than, -sufficient to cover maintenance and top-dressing of the green, which amounted- to £52 8s 4d, a very .small total considering the volume of work entailed. After wiping off all outstanding accounts, the omv liability was -a hank overdraft of £93 2s 9d, -against which was set oft an item of £l9 8s 3d from the Kaponga Croquet Club. Last -sea-son the .club s rinks took part in the Taranaki Central Division clubs’ cliampionship, playing on the Avon, Inglewood, Eltham, and Stratford greens. Though failing in all the games, the teams made a very creditable showing as representatives of so young a club. Owing to club competitions- taking up a- considerable time, they were able to piay only one .friendly game, that being with the- Park Club (H-awera), which proved most enjoyable. A club rink also competed in the Hawera tournament, the players being accorded favourable, comment by their old, hardened opponents, who generally expressed the opinion that Kaponga. possessed the- material, but .lacked experience. Tlie executive congratulated Mr A. H. Hawkins on winning the club championship, which carried the gold medal and Dry sc: ale Cup. The thanks of the club were duo to tlie following donors of trophies, etc.Mr Morgan Priest, gold medal; Mr Crawford -Wats on, buttons; Messrs Drysd-ale ’and Co., chalHenge cup ; Mr A. Y. Tait. hedge plants; Mr S. Lissaman. pavilion table; Mr J. Stevens, garden .seat-. The executive recorded- its 'appreciation, of the services of -all helpers in the- queen carnival, particularly those of the secretary, Mr W. H. L. Roberts, to whose- energy and efficiency also the satisfactory position of the club’s finances was n-n large measure due. The club, had also to thank Ml’ C. H. Severne for his. gratuitous- services as auditor, -and Mr A. J. Herbert, overseer of the green, who-se remuneration was much below the value of the experienced work and- care- bestowed by him on the club’s property. Mr J. Hessell moved the adoption of the report -and balance-sheet, coupled with a vote of thanks to the executive for placing the club on a. soundl financial basis.—The motion wa-s seconded by Mr R. E. Williams' and carried. The election- of officers for the ensuing year resulted as follows:- — Patron, the Hon. O. J- Ha when, M.P.; president, Mr Harley Henaerson • vice-presidents, Messrs Robert Law and A. Y. Tait: secretary, Mr W. H. L. Roberts (re-elected); treasurer, Mr J. Hessell (re-elected) ; auditor, Mr C. H. Severne- (rc-elected) ; 'executive, Messrs J. A. Dawson, A. H. Hawkins, W. Hi slop and J. Stevens; selectors -and match committee, Messrs A. H. Hawkins and J. Tyack; green committee, Messrs A. E. Anderson- -and J Stevens; dull overseer, M-n A. J. Herbert (re-elected) ; delegate to centre, Mr A. E-„ Anderson. It was pointed out that, to avoid tl» risk of . disqualification of teams -at tournaments, it was necessary that the club colours be registered with, tlie d ustrict -centre, -and the executive we-rip. requested to ascertain suitable colours still available and report at the next meeting of members. The overseer was empowered to- carry into effect a recommendation by the outgoing executive that the existing line of -hedge trees on the- dividing terrace between the croquet lawn and bowling green be re-planted eight feet nearer the bowling green, to permit of seating accommodation facing the croquet lawn. It was decided to adopt reqonimondiatioils approved bv the outgoing executive to- erect a verandah on the bowlers’ club-house and provide a shelter shed fen tools and .material for top-dressing. The offers of Messrs A. V. Tait -and f> H. Briggs to- give material for the erection of gates at the entrance to
the green were accepted with thanks, and l it was resolved that the completion of the work he referred; to the executive, with power to act. On the suggestion of the secretary, it was decided to institute a system of club match records for the season by means of score cards. A vote of thanks was passe a to Mr L Crawford-Watson for his proffered gifts of ‘ferns” in the club’s champion pairs competition. A long discussion took place; on the question of members’ .subscriptions, and it was finally resolved that the annua' subscription be £3 3s, reducible to £- 15s, if paid before December 31. general.. Two Hamilton ladies, Mrs 0. J. Priest and Miss Vena, Priest, aunt and cousin respectively,* of Mr Morgan Priest, are spending an extended holiday here with Mr and Mrs M. Priest. Mr McCormack, of the Stratford branch of the Fanners’ Co-op. Society, is managing the Kaiponga branch during Mr J. Charters’ term of enforced absence through indisposition. Mr AV. Darragh, late of Ka.ponga, has purchased Mr C. Coltart’.s interest in the well-known Hawera-Opunake motor service as from'to-day.
