The severest earthquake- in tlie Insto ay of the islands slhoolc the Azores to-day, according to a report sent by the American Consul (Mr Remillard) to the State Department. Mr Remillard says: ‘ ‘Houses are down and all houses have suffered'. It is impossible yet to estimate, the loss of life and property.”—-A. and N.Z. Assn.

The Azores is the name of a group of islands in the Atlantic. They be-j long to and form an integral part-of Portugal, from which they are about 830 miles distant to the west. They extend over some 400 miles, have a total area of 922 square miles, and form three -clusters. They form a chain of volcanoes which rise from the Doluhin Ridge, and l are subject to earthquakes and eruptions; they have rocky coasts and mountainous interiors and contain many hot mineral springs. The population is 242,650.
