CHANCE NOT ACCEPTED. (by TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 30. A sentence of four months’ hard labour was imposed on George Sullivan (24) for theft of £l3 6s Old from his employer. The magistrate declined to grant probation,, saying that the accused had been given a chance hv his employer, but continued stealing.

WELLINGTON, Aug. 30. A Chinese, Ngan Jim, was fined £25 at the Magistrate’s Court this morning for being in charge of a common gam-ing-house.

DUNEDIN, Aug. 30. Shown to be a thief and a “peeping Tom,’’ a nuisance around women’s colleges, Daniel Thomas Ronald Tucker (20) was sentenced in the Police Court to two years’ reformative treatment.

FRAUD AT PALMERSTON NORTH

PALMERSTON N., Aug. 30. William Frederick Hodson, with two aliases, appeared at the Magistrate’s Court this morning, when a. number of charges involving false' pretence's were preferred against him. Hodson, it was stated, operated' in Palmerston North, Wanganui, Feild'ing, Shannon, Otaki and Wellington, representing himself to he connected with a. Nelson apple company, and extracted small sums of money from various people. Senior Detective Quirke stated that Hodson had recently been sentenced to a month’s imprisonment at Waipukuran for a similar offence. He asked the accused to, he remanded: to Wellington until Friday next on a charge concerning Wellington, where there would be other charges preferred. Hodgson pleaded guilty to each of the other offences, and was sentenced to two terms of three months each on two charges, sentences to he cumulative.

TSSUE OF VALUELESS CHEQUES.

PALMERSTON N._, Aug. 30. -“I think the public should know 4-bout this man,’’ stated Senior Detective Quirke at the Magistrate’s Court this morning, when Mr Cooper applied for the suppression of the name of Robert Forbes Reid (37)), who was charged with on August 6, at Wanganui, of issuing a valueless cheque for £2O and obtaining a diamond: ring and £2 in money, and on August 28 at Palmertaon -North issuing -a valueless cheque for £2O and obtaining goods valued: at £IS and £2 in money. “He is wanted at Taumnrunui and there are about ten charges to be preferred against -him at Wanganui,” proceeded the senior detective. ‘‘He came to Palmerston North on Saturday, registered, at a, hotel under a false name and started to defraud. He. came here with three- cheques for £2o.’ The magistrate (Mr J. D. Hewitt): “I don’t think I .should suppress his name.” On the-application of the police, the accused was'remanded to Monday next.

MANSLAUGHTER ALLEGED

AUCKLAND, Aug. 30. At the Police Court Colin McDonald (23), arrested at Sydney, was charged with manslaughter bv killing Andrew Souter. in August last year. One witness stated that the deceased and a companion were walking down Victoria Street, when, three other men commenced to argue- with Sou tar. Witness -saw S-o-utar struck twice by one- of the trio. Sou tar fell, his head hitting the footpath. Son tar -died in the hospital. Neither this witness nor t-wo others could identify thin accused' as the man who struck the deceased-. The proprietor of the house where the accused boarded stated that on the date in question Sdutar and two friends ettne in. The accused had one thumb injured, apparently recent. He said ho had been in a, fight. The case is proceeding.

EX-TOWN CLERK ADMITS THEFT. GREYMOUTH, Aug. 30. Patrick Joseph CSnaagb, .Wyc-towm caerk of Brunner, pleaded guilty to a charge of steeling and converting to :Ins own use. £346 4s 3d. money belonging to tli© Brunner Borough Council. Ho was committed t vj the- Supreme Court for bail being allowed in a. sum of £2OO.
