Talking to a, Wellington Post reprctentative, Sir Frederick Jones, emi.irman of >K)e liter’s, who is visiting, Zealand, commented on the reenperative powers of Elngland. He lelt- on a tour just after the collapse of the great strike, and was thus enabled to judge its effects. “The recuperative power of England is marvellous,” ho said. ,V a the wonder of the Continent, and also of the United States. England was fast recoverig from the effects of the war when the general "strike -the greatest in history—came upon hex. The immediate effect of the strike wa.-> good, but the failure to settle strike has worn off some of the good etteet-. The general istrike was a very good natured one, very well controlled, and characterised by extraordinary restraint, both on the part of the authorities -and of the Labour people. It created very good feeling right through the country, and if it were only possible to .settle the coal strike, there was mo doubt about it that it would increase the business activities of the nation and its trade and enterprise enormously. 1 believe that even •now when -the coal strike is settled, which is likely to he- very soon, the general industrial condition of the United Kingdom and the general _laJioiir • conditions will bo infinitely improved, and I think an. added impetus will be given to business enterprise, winch i's simply being held in check at present. The financial credit of England is sound both on the English Exchange and the Continent.”
