LOSS TO MELBOURNE BOARD

Received 11.20 a.m. to-day. MELBOURNE, Aug. 30. At the opening of a new section of the tramway system, the chairman oi the Tramwav Board, Mr. Cameron, said that, the system of motor buses which the hoard" was forced to operate to compete with private bus owners, involved a' loss of £oo,ooo last vent •done. The receipts were £17,000 short of working expenses, to which had to be added depreciation, interest and other charges. He contended that the condition of the roads made, it impossible to run a motor bus service more than two years without meeting, with disaster.
