CANTERBURY PRODUCE MARKET,
CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 27
The potato market touched zero on Tuesdav, -business being done as low as £4 5s f.o.b. sacks' in, for coastal. Today the figure is £4 10s, so there has been a shade of improvement. The decline of Auckland stocks has been the main cause of the slight recovery, there being some purchases for the Kurow at the improved figure. The Sydney quotation to-dav was £l4, but^ consigned potatoes are not making this figure. Few farmers are coming forward aiul one or two arc accepting £4 on trucks for Sydney packing for coastal. Quotations have been as low.as £3 5s on trucks, but there is no record of any business at loss than £3 10s.
There is a fair disposal of seeds to farmers. For quality white clover •JOd to .12d a lb on trucks is available and for cow-grass 8d -to lOd. There was some import inquiry but not a great deal of seed. is up to export standard. Ryegrass is quoted on trucks at. 2s 6cl to 2s 9d for Italian and 3s- to 3s (id for perennial. . Good heavy cocksfoot is worth 7d to 7-Ad and ordinary to 6d a lb. Oats arc firm at recent quotations, 4s and 4s 3d respectively.
