ON THE AIR
NOTES FOR LISTENERS-IN.
(Conducted by "Wave-Length.") In order that this column may render the maximum of service to wireless enthusiasts, "WaveLength" invites correspondence from fellow listeners. Accounts of reception, new stations heard, items especially appreciated and the like, will make interesting and often helpful reading for others. Address "Wave-Length," c/o Hawera Star, Hawera.
The new station,'lYA (Auckland), is now making a name for itself. The reproduction of late has been excellent, and the afternoon programmes, from 3 o’clock until 4.30, are really enjoyable. Next- year we li.steners-in will part with our 30s with pleasure, as by that time the Christchurch station 3 A will be in full swing also. “Wave length” lias not made reference to the “howler” yet, but necessity bids him do so. Perhaps some operators do not realise the annoyance- but in any case we have some who uro causing much interference locally. Let u.s hope that they will take this hint and try to avoid this trouble. On, Thursday evening station IYA, Auckland, apologised over the air for the delay caused in handling of correspondence from Australia. The announcer said this was due to the size of the mails ,so it is evident that IYA i.s appreciated across the Tasman. Advice lias been received from Mr. Spencer Speady, Herbertville, Hawke’s Bay, to the effect that WBBM, station of the Stewart Warner ltadio Corporation, Chicago, U.S.A., will broadcast a special programme for New Zealand listenere on Monday next (August at 5.30 p.m., New Zealand time. This station, which broadcasts on a wave-length of 226 metres, held a successful test 'with New. Zealand last year. Reports of reception will be greatly appreciated, by “Wavelength.” 3LO has planned an interesting composition. entitled “September’s Most Beautiful Bride.” To qualify, intending brides must send three photographs ox themselves in different poses,_ get married in September, and permit 3LO to broadcast the ive cl diner ceremony. A very good, prize is being offered There is a tendency among listeners to blame the broadcasting stations for fading. It is not only true but obvious that variations in the power supply to the transmitter will cause variations in signal strength, but such variations as are likely to occur are usually very slight, and, not comparable to the changes in strength noticeable in the received .signals; nor, as a rule, do they occur rapidly or periodically. Even in a poor station this cause of fading is improbable, and in a properly designed one it can be confidently disregarded as a most unlikely defect.’ Some fading is also caused by changes in the wave-lengtli of the transmission, but this ishould not be serious as a rule. It is less likely to be noticed on long wave-lengths than on short wave-lengths, and is most likely to lie caused by the swaying of an aerial which is too slack and not very high.
