Received 12.20 p.m. to-uay. LONDON, Aug. 35. The weather was warm and the wicket good for the match with, Kent at Canterbury. The attendance was 12,000. Ohapmiain won. the toss and elected to bat, Hardinge and Ashdown open Lug to G regory and Hendry. The start win® slow. G regory was uncertain in length and was kicking. Hendry was consistent, but unlucky not to have gob Ashdown's wicket early. When facing Maliley and Grimmett, the batsmen were more at ease and both were responsible for some sparkling cuts. Practically all the. runs were secured on the off side. Ashdown, when 32, was dropped by Ellis at the wicket off Ryder. He gave a second chance four balls later, hitting Miaiiley to leg through Ryder’s hands. The bowling was changed frequently and the score rose very slowly. "When it reached 35, Mai ley beat Ashdown, who had given a vigorous forceful, display of cutting. Ryder maintained a good length taaicl pegged away on the off side, hut without avail. Wool ley made an unenterprising start and then settled down to cut Grimmett actively. Having carried the, score to 122, Flardinge fell into iai trap set, by Macartney, who gave him a full toss, on the leg side, which he hit hard into- the hands) of Collins at square leg. After the first, hour he played .attractive cricket and hit seven fours. Woolley and Seymour were content to. take things easily.
