SECESSION ISSUE.
AFRICAN MINISTER. DEFENDS HIS ATTITUDE.
BF CABLE— PRESS ASSOCIATION —COP FRIGHT. CAPETOWN, Aug. 24. The Hon. F. W. Beyers, Minister of Alines and Industries, replying to a question by a correspondent, who asked now, in view of his oath as a Minister of the Crown, Mr Beyers could advocate secession, said that the right of secession had been admitted for the past 80 or 90 years by prominent British Ministers and others. It therefore followed that for every reason a person was a British subject he was entitled, under the constitution of any Dominion. to make propaganda, for putting absolute equality with the United Kingdom into practice, and even advocating secession. An oath of allegiance could not derogate from constitutional rights and was therefore not inconsistent with the exercise of such rights.
Air Beyers said, further, that there could' not- be any question of absolute severance from the British Commonwealth or community of nations until the two great white races. English and Dutc-h. substantially agreed upon stepping out- of that commonwealth or oommunitv.
