STRATFORD COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. Ac the ordinary meeting of the Stratford County Council on Saturday there were present: Crs. T. IX. Anderson (chairman), S. Parker, J. Jacobsen, J. X. Belcher, AY. H. Were, T. T. Murray, W. Vickers, S. Pitt, J. AY. Spence (engineer), and. C. Pen.ni (clerk). The engineer reported as follows: — North Riding (V est). —General repair work in the way of metal patching and water-tabling had been done on the Lower Pembroke, Cardiff and Radnor roads. Eighty-nine yards of shingle bad been used in banking up the edges of the tar on the Mountain Road. Metal crushing was being carried 1 out •>n Denmark Terrace for maintenance work on the Mangamii and Croydon roads.
South Riding.—The clay banking of the metal on the Finnerty Road, had been completed. A set of eight- 12-inch pipes had been placed in this road in front of Mr P. O’Brien’s property. On taking the levels at the upper culvert, it was found that little could be done in, the way of lowering the present pipes. These pipes became blocked through a large mat of willow roots lodging at the mouth of the pipes. Records were taken of the result of theblock, the water rising 20 inches in 144- hours, increasing the depth to 6ft 6in above v the pipes. On removal of the blockage the water ran down to normal in 3?.- hours. Further assistance had been given in taking down of . the banks of the Bird Road. A fat-tie extra work would be necessary to complete this job. A wash-out took place on the AYaihapa Road, a set of 12-inch pipes having been put in to replace an old wooden culvert where the trouble occurred. Repairs had been carried out on the Bird, Skinner, AVingrove, lhrkengahu, Cheal, Cimie, and AYarwick Roads. AVest Riding.—General repair work had been carried- out on the- Hastings, Cardiff, AVaingongoro, C'limie, Potio, Palmer, Duthie, Opunake No. 3. Mauaia and Rowan Roads. All old wooden culvert on the Clim.ie Road had been replaced with eight 9-inoli pipes. When the weather permitted the banks on the Opunake Road had been trimmed up, provision being made for side tracking the hills at a later date. GENERAL. The council supported the resolution of the Ohura. Countv Council urging on the Prime Minister the necessity of some new system for raising money 7 for public hospitals whereby the public should help to maintain the hospitals instead of the brunt falling on the ratepayers.
