EX=DICTATOR ARRESTED. GREATER LIBERTY PROMISEE. REASON FOR. SUCCESS OF COUP. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHI ATHENS, Aug 23. Warships have arrived, in Spezzia harbour. General Pft.nga.los lias been arrested. He at first resisted, but after a struggle capitulated, to his captors' terms. He will be tried on charges of maladministration. His wife escftpird. General, Kondilis. leader of the revolt. promises elections within eight months. He has already restored the freedom of the press. It is .stated that the success of the revolution is due; to General Pangalcs’s fttbitrary arrests and to the press embargo enabling General Kondilis to prepare- an unexpected coup from his "place of concealment, to which he escaped when conspirators were recently arcentlv arrested and imprisoned l c-n a ehrrge cf inflaming the troops. Proclamations have been posted up in Athens asking the populace l to celebrate its deliverance from, fourteen mouths’ tyranny. One of General Pangalos’e Ift.st official acts was to issue a, decree threatening heavy fines and imprisonment for anyone praising or blft.mimg royalties .or politicians, living or dead, since •1909.—A. and N.Z. PERIGAMOS ENGAGED REBEL SQUADRON.
Received 2 p.m. to-day. LONDON, Aug. 22. The correspondent of The limes in Athens states that the Kinds and the ■Leon, assisted by a seaplane squadron, ■are reported to have engaged the Perga, mos, whose commander is sympathetic towards General Pan gal os’s course and the destroyer flotilla, commanded by Captain Kolialexis, who is .unwilling to recognise the revolution. —Times. FATE OF GENERAL PANG ADOS. REPORT OF HIS ARREST DENI ED. FLEEING ON A CRUISER. Received 2 p.m. to-dav. ATHENS, Aug. 22. The whereabouts of General Pangalos is doubtful. It was at first reported that a. Government, (aeroplane had frustrated this attempt to escape in another aeroplane, though bis wife evaded pursuit. Later it was announced that General Piamga los was a prisoner aboard a warship, which, was proceeding to Athens. On contrary, "he is aboard the cruiser Pergamos, manned by his supporters, which the battleship Kiikis and a; destroyer Leon will Are upon if she attempts D* pass Corinth Canal.—‘Sydney Sun Cable.
