WIN FOR TARANAKI.

WANGANUI BEATEN, 2—l. A FAST, CLOSE GAME. (Special to the Star.) WANGANUI, Aug. 21. The representative hockey match, Wanganui v. Taranaki, was played at Gonville and' resulted in a. win for Taranaki by two goals to one. In the opening stages the visitors were in the ascendancy, and an opening made by Page saw Harding score from a scramble. Taranaki were soon on the attack again, but good work by the Wanganui halves brought play to half-way. From the throw-in-, Sim mo tubs cleared. Wanganui then attacked strongly, but the defence cleared in brilliant fashion. So far Taranaki had the better of the exchanges. Davies beat three Wanganui men in succession and centred’ to Lambic, who failed with a stinging shot. A free hit to Wanganui for obstruction saw tlio liome team once more in a good position, but the visiting backs were' equal to the occasion and! saved! a dangerous situation. A line centre by Tigard went behind. From the resultant' bully, Taranaki cleared to neutral territory. Pryor obtained possession and made a good solo effort, but Siinmonds, coming acrossfield quickly, managed to block a certain goal. Before half-time, Tigard scored for Wanganui and the spell ended one all.
