The game was played before a crowd of 8000. The teams were: AUCKLAND. Full-back: Butler. Three-quarters: Hook, Lucas (captain), and Ifwerson. Five-eighths: Caramick and Freeman. Half: Wright. Wing forward : Batty. Hookers: Hadley and Palmer. A Fiddle row: Cat-heart, Webber, and Knight. Back row: McWilliams and Finlayson. HAWKE'S BAY. Full-back: Nepia. Three-quarters: Grenside, Blake and Jensen. Five-eighths: Cooke and .Johnston. Half: Mill. Wing forward: Walker. Hookers: Irvine and Kirkpatrick. Middle row: Brownlie, Mahoney and Brownlie. Back row: Single and Swain. THE PLAY. Auckland won the toss and Bay set play in motion. Play started at a great pace, and McWilliams, Knight and Batty dribbled to the Bay line, where, from a mark on the side line. ‘ Freeman dropped a beautiful goal. ! I Auckland 3 Hawke'-s Bay 0 Within 10 seconds, offside play by Battv at half-way saw Nepia land a splendid goal. Hawke’k Bay 3 Auckland 3 Almost immediately Lucas handled the ball on the ground 40 yards out. NepiH dropped another wonderful goal. Hawke’s Bay 6 Auckland .3 Mill made a dazzling run to the Auckland twenty-five, where from a scrum Johnston badly Treat Freeman and passed to Cooke, who raced under the posts. Nepia improved the score. Hawke’s Bay 11 Auckland 3 'Lucas then intercepted between Johnston and Cooke, and took play to the Hawke’s Bay end, but a splendid line kick by Jensen took play .to halfway. where, from a line-out, Hawke’s Bay forwards opened 1 j up, _ and C. Brownlie scored. Nepia missed the kick. Hawke’s Bay 14 Auckland 3 Butler, shortly afterwards, missed a free kick on the home twenty-five. Auckland’s first try came from a fine run by McWilliams, who_ ran to .he Hawke’s Bay line, dropping the ball, which Ifwerson snapped up and dived over near the flag. Butler missed the kick. McWilliams converting with a fine kick from the-side line. At halftime the score was: Hawke’s Bay 19 -Auckland ' 11 Immediately on resumption, Auckland rushed play to the Bay end, but Cooke relieved. Auckland kept it up, and Finlayson made a nice ride line rush'. Bay came hack in a nice passing rush. M. Brownlie securing six . yards from the line and buHocking over in the corner. Hawke’s Bay 41 Auckland 11 « The game ended soon after. Auckland offered splendid resistance- - to the great Hawke’s Bay team and displayed fine Rugby, fore and aft, particularly towards the end of the first spell. Tackling weakness was evident in their backsv. but the forwards played -a fine game, particularly McWilliams, Knight and Findlayson.
