ITEMS OF INTEREST. BY CABLE— PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. LONDON, Aug. 21. An Australian, Dr. F. W. Norwood, pastor of the City Temple, has accepted an; invitation tcj pneach at' the Church Congress at Southampton. This is the first time such an invitation has been extended to nonconformists. An American, Ricardo Sereiber, has been made! a Knight of the British Empire in recognition of his. valuable services in Anglo-Peruvian relations. This unusual bestowal of a British knighthood marks the. termination of Sir Ricardo Sereiber’s seven years’ service in London. He is shortly going to Hague as Minister. ATHENS, Aug. 21. General Metaxas, and the ex-chief of staff, General Calogeras, have been arrested and sent to Salamis. It is believed their, banishment is in connection with the plot to murder President Pangalos, which was discovered last month and which, le/L to the banishment of two ex-Premiers and other prominent political leaders.
PARIS, Aug. 21. V Swift retribution overcame a masked bandit, who entered the ladies’ corn's partment in the Bentsehen-Berlin train, robbed the occupants at revolver point, and then pulled! the alarm cord to facilitate his escape. He jumped off as the train slowed down, but an express swept by in the. opposite direction, fatally mangling the bandit.
HONOLULU, Aug. 21. F. J. Dickson, single, of Montreal, wh.o committed suicide by shooting himself on the Niagara two days out from Victoria, was bound for Australia and left a note to the captain requesting secrecy to fool his enemies, and that his body be weighted and dumped overboard. This was done, and the passengers were not aware of the suicide until the ship arrived here.
OTTAWA', Aug., 21. A Winnipeg message states that the Empire Parliamentary Conference in •September, 1927, will be held in Canada if an invitation is forthcoming from, the Dominion Government, according to an announcement bv the secretary, Sir Howard Degville, who is here en route to Australia. Amelia Harriet ,Crouch has been arrested on a charge of the murder of her husband, Frank, a retired manufacturer, living ,at Summerhouse Farm, near 01 acton-on-Sea, He was found fatally shot with a- revolver clasped in his hand.
