NO DAMAGE DONE, The Hawera fire brigade received a call by telephone at 5.45 p.m. on Saturday. Members were quickly on the scene of the alarm, which was a house on the south corner of the junction of Furlong and Victoria Streets, occupied by Mr. J. K. Griffiths.. Washing had been done in the course of the day. Later, a boarder in the house discovered a benzine case alightin the wash-liouse and gave the alarm. The flames were under control when .the brigade arrived. The services of the engine were not requisitioned, but the scorched portion of the building was liberally douched with water, and the floor board® were removed to ensure that the danger would not- recur.
