FIGHT FOR SEATS. SPAIN’S WITHDRAWAL BELIEVED INEVITABLE. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. LONDON, Aug. 20. Tho fight for the League scats opens definitely at Geneva on August 30, when the Council Reorganisation Commission meets to consider Spain’s demand.
The Morning Post’s Geneva correspondent says that the reply of the commission -will be in the negative, after, •which Spain will withdraw or accept a compromise. ,
The British delegation’s instructions stand; it will be Germany first but favourable towards Spain if Germany can persuade the latter. A solution, however, is considered impossible in view of the action of the Scandinavian bloc opposing additional permanent members.
Spain’s withdrawal, therefore, is believed to be inevitable. It is quite possible that Viscount Cecil’s compromise, providing for three additional non-permanent seats, will also be revised in view of the withdrawal of Spain and Brazil. The Mormng Post’s Paris correspondent says it is thought possible that De Rivera’s claim to Tangier for Spain will be forwarded as a basis of bargaining when the matter of the League seats is being discussed. . INTENTIONS OF TURKEY. SUPPORT FROM GERMANY. r . LONDON, Aug. 6. The Turkish Government, supported by Germany, is considering becoming a member of the League of Nations, says the Angora correspondent of the Times.
