FIGHT AT SAN ANDGEL.

CATHOLICS AND POLICE SEVERAL CASUALTIES. by cable— press association—co'ira'.GHT MEXICO CITY, Aug. 15. Several Catholics ancl a number of police were wounded in a clash on Sunday in the suburb of San Angel. Several were arrested. The Catholics had gathered to defend the church at San Jacinto, in response to unfounded rumours that' the Schematic Church was planning to seize the edifice. GOVERNMENT’S DRASTIC ACTION RESENTED. SHOPPING STRIKE AND BOYCOIT. A shopping strike 'has- been declared. The populace has decided to avoid unnecessary spending of money, hoping that this economic pressure will influence the Government. President Calles, in a -speech, declared that the hour was approaching for the final fight to determine the triumph of the revolution or of reaction. The struggle was between light and' darkness, and the Government would win. The Pi'esident announced that he would not permit the churches to he turned over to committees of Catholics. He would order the mayor of each town to name his own committee- .for that purpose. Catholics, however, hone to be -aell represented on these committees. The mayors also have the right to allow worshippers to continue to occupy the churches, and to allow people to read the Prayer Book as if a priest was a.t the altar. As the crowds left t.he regular masses for the last time they were enrolled on the so-called “National League for the Defence of Religious Liberty,’’ which is starting an economic boycott of protest. Catholics and their friends propose to refrain from all spending, except on absolute necessities. Theatre owners and dealers _in luxuries are already greatly worried, and may bring pressure on the Government. . Housewives are readjusting the domestic budgets, and will buy frugally, abstaining from meat and all luxury foods. Tito Crespi, Italian-born, but now a naturalised American and secretary to the Papal Legation here, has been arrested and deported.
