An exchange reports that a passengei by a recent steamer which came through the Panama, Canal says there was much agitation at Panama ; everybody was talking about America having" been beaten by the British in securing concessions over a large area, oi land on which very rich gold had beer, discovered. A mining engineer, representative -of an English syndicate, arrived at Panama and spent two months there. The general impression was that lie was interested in rubber, and was looking for a likely spot to start, a plantation. When be had secured all the concessions lie needed, it was discovered that it was gold lie- was after. This caused great consternation among the Americans, who had evidently been caught napping. Evidence of tlie growing popularity of New Zealand as a tourist resort is furnished in the decision of yet another band of American tourists to visit the Dominion this summer, states the Auckland correspondent of the Lyttelton Times. This is in addition to tlie large number that will come on the palatial liners Carintliia and Franconia. The latest party is not ' hiring a special steamer for the trip. It is travelling under the auspices of a San- Francisco firm of tourist agents and will leave by the Tahiti on December 29, arriving in the. middle of January.
