MASQUERADE BALL.
PIPE BAND FUNCTION. UNIFORM FUND APPEAL. Gay with multi-coloured flags and streamers, and thronged with a happy assembly of dancers, the. interior of the Foresters’ Hall, Hawera, presented an animated and attractive -scene last evening on the occasion of the masquerade- ball conducted under the auspices of the Hawera. Highland Pipe Band. During the period -since its initial appearance -before the -public on Christmas Eve, 1924, Hawer-a’s- Pipe Band has earned a- popular place in the social and recreational life of the: community, and evidence of this was given in the worthy -support accorded last evening’s function, which was organised by Mr N. Hannah with the object of augmenting the hand uniform fund. Approximately 150 merrymakers were in attendance, many appearing in- fancy dress costumes, picturesque- in colouring and design, which emphasised the carnival spirit and contributed largely to the gaiety of an occasion which proved replete with enjoyment for all participants. The. hall has- -seldom, if ever, been the scene- of such -a keenly appreciated entertainment. The intriguing interest aroused- through the masks and dominoes' worn by those in fancy dres-s gave an -added zest to the proceedings, and until their removal, on- completion of judging, -speculation was -rife a-s to- the identity of the wearers. In giving awards -in the -different classes the judge (Mrs M. Bailey) was presented with a -difficult task, but made- decisions which met with general a-noroval. The prize-winners were as follow: Fancy Dress.—Misses Beale and Lon de-r (‘ ‘Ptoret to s’ ’). Comic.- —Miss Brown (“Poulette”) and Mr A. E. Burgess (“Chanticleer”). Poster. —Miss N. Hannah (“Three Castles Cigarettes”); special, Miss Kelly “Goodwin, Davy and Co.”). Dancing competitions- were judged by Mis C. Wilson, who had -also to use keen discrimination owing to- the even nature of the contests, and in the open waltzing championship wa®_ -compelled to divide the honours. The- results were:
IV alt z Championship.: —Miss M. Kearns —Mr "P. Steffert -and Mis® Whyte—Mr Gibbons (equal). —-Reverse Waltz.—Miss- Yin-ten —Mr A. E. Burgess. Highland Sebottische. —Miss Pettett —Mr IV. G. Bell. McPhee- (violin), R. Swan (cornet). E. Booth (drums), assisted -by Mr D. Mitchell (violin), while a delicious supper was supplied and served bv -a: committee- of ladies. Mr W. G.
