'The totalisator handled £64,330 10s, as against £62,735 10s last year. The results are:— HUNTERS’ HURDLES. CHRISTCHURCH, Aug. 10. The Grand National meeting was opened l to-day in fine but co;'d weather, before a. large attendance, which included the Gov’cimor-Geinefal (Sir Charles Eergusson), the: Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. J. 0. Coates), and
the Minister i'or Public Works (Hon. K. S. Williams). The track was very fast, and both the Grand National! Steeplechase, and the Winter 'Cup were nun- in record times. Tlie leading events were triumphs for Auckland, both Peter Maxwell and K awful (second) being Aucklanders, while I/© Choucas, the Winter Cup winner, and -Nippy (third) hr.il from, the north. A. Trick/.chunk appeared to receive rather severe injuries when Ranui fell with him in the Grand National, and A- IT. Kills broko bis collarbone when Happy Days' loir, in the 'trial Hurdles. H. W. Ngata’s effort was beyond praise, as he retried his 13 stone like tli© tradesman ho ds. In the Hunters’ Hurdles. Birkcuosc and Revel v.cro favourites, Rangi Sarto and Weird being bracketed in that order, these being the only ones hacked.. Revel led over the- first fence, where Kiasnci fcil. Riikc-iiosc and Markbv were in front when passing eh© stands from P.evel, Rangi Sarto, and Bandalcrc. Hovel and Rangi Sarto closed on the leading pair teeing'down the back, and two fences from, home .Kovel dropped back and permitted Markby to lead Birkeno.se and Bang! Sarto. Rangi Sarto just showed the «?,v '.at the last fence, wher© he blundered and was almost down, leaving Revel well clear of Markby and! Biirlce.ricee. Revel appeaered to ; b© a good winner, but Rangi Sarto came' again under punishment, and beat Reve.l by ai tieeik*. Birkenos© was four lengths away third, just, ahead of Markby and Be-nda/ero. Matnipnke- was a long way berk next.
Happy Days and Snyon-ara. each, carried- about .-Cl 6.50, with Ghiement f£]oQo> best hacked of the others, in the Trial Hurdles. Axle, Kapun-a. and Uleaborg led to the first fence, and, Going to the second. Axle just led fl-Vahorg. Kapuna, Happy Days' and Lord I o.slie, hut Happy Days blundered into- the fence and. fell. Axle, led Ulea.bb.rg past the mile, post from Kapuna, G.'eme-nt, Lord Leslie and Ra-
diac, with Sayonara, at least 50 yards behind the leaders. Sayonara: then began, to move up, and, crossing the top, Axle, Uleaborg. Radiac, Gluinent and Kareao were racing in a. bunch, with Sayonara creeping up. Sayonara and Uleaborg jumped the last fence on terms just ahead of Axle, Kareao, Kapuna. and G'ument. in the run in, Sayonara. won easily by 2.1 length*: from Uleaborg, which defeated Radiac by a length and a half. Glument, Ax'e, Kareao and Kapuna were next.
In the Cashmere Plate, High Pitch was a very hot favourite, with about £IBOO on his chance, the coming Precious £IOOO. Others backed, were: Peho, Orifla.mb and then the Paper Boy-Cross. Bow bracket. All Colours and Flying -visit, on the outside, began best and with Peho and Orifiamb led on to the course proper, with Cornstalk, Paper Boy, High Gear and Serotina handy. Paper Boy came through at the distance, and with Peho drew out, Paper Boy beating Peho by half a. length. Serotina was half a. length away third, with High Pitch fourth, and Waterlow, Cornstalk and .Paris
next. High Pitch was allowed, to drop behind in the early part, but was Hying at the end in fourth place. Comical (£1360) wound uip favourite for the Jumpers’ Elat from Rahgatahi (£1100). The Nga la-Brigadier Bill bracket and Lady Gay were also Ave.ll backed, lli lint ion was squeezed back
to last, and Lady Giiv and Bonomel were the first to break the line. Dubious and Lady Gay led past the mile and a. quarter post- from Landbird and Brigadier Bill, with LucuHent last. Racing tloAvn the back, Bonomel drew out from Dubious. Tcuterfickl, Brigadier Bill, Raiigatahi, Lady Gay, Ngata and Confical, with Grown Coin. ■Black Cruiser, and LucuHent moving up. Rangatalii led into the straight from) Tenterfield. Dubious, Crown. Coin. Black Cruiser, Comical and: Ngata. Black Cruiser was in front of Crown Coin a. furlong from 'home, with Ngata showing up on the rails. Ngata came through to win in. great -style by a length and: a half from Black Cruiser, which lasted long enough to heat Crown Coin by half a. length. Comical was a good fourth, and then came LucuHent, Lady Comet, Raiigatahi and Dubious heading the others. Kawini (£1600), Tuki (£1470), Fireblight and Master Peter (£1400), and Passin’ Through (£1300) were the favourites in the Grand National Steeplechase, Peter Maxwell being a rank outsider. Casualties began early, for Ranui dropped) hi® rider at the first fence, where Frenchman led from Uncle Bob, Omahu, Red Cent, Peter MaxAvell and: Fireblight, this being the order of the leaders also at the stands. At Cutts’s fence Frenchman was several lengths clear of Uncle Bob, Red Cent, Master Peter, Omahu and! Peter Maxwell, ■, with Kendal leading the others. Crossing the kennels double for the first time Frenchman led Uncle Boh, Master Peter, Peter Maxwell. Red Cent, Kendal, Avith Tuki, Passin’ Through and Omahu last. At the stands the next time Frenchman led Master Peter, Uncle Bob, Peter Maxwell. Kendal, Tigerland, Charlatan, Pirelliiglit, Red Cent and l Kawini, and the whi'ppers-in aa-cto Passin’ Through, Omahu and Tuki. At Cutts’s, Master Peter took charge from Frenchman and Uncle Bob, Avith Peter Maxwell. Red Cent, Kendal. Charlatan, and RaJAi'ini next, hi reblight lost her rider at the next fence. The sod Avail saw Birkenella lose his rider, and- at the kennels the last time round Master Peter led from Tigerland and Peter Maxwell, Avith French man, Uncle Bob. Charlatan, Kawini, Kendal and Passin’ Through next, and Tuki, Red Cent. Omahu and Kipling last. Peter Maxwell then made his run and took the lead, and K-awigi set out in pursuit, with Charlatan also making u.p ground. Peter MaxAvell led oA-er the last two fences, and Aveut on to win easily by .five lengths. There wa-s a, good 'struggle' from the last fence, and Kawini lasted' long enough to heat' Charlatan
hv a length. Frenchman finished well in fourth place, and then at in,ter Amis came Master Peter, Uncle Boh, Tigerland, Kendal, Tuki, Passin’ Through, Kiinliug, Red' Cent and Omahu. King Abbey and Ostennan were each Avell backed on their chances in the Enfield Steeplechase, these being the only ones hacked. King Abbey led over the first fence from Ostennan, Nyanza, and North Inch. Nymnzo and Naughty Peter came to grief at the first and second jumps of the stand double respectively, and Tvinfj Abbey just led Ostennan and North Inch doAA’n the hack. Mazama. refused l at the kennels double, and' Blue: Hall was up with the three leader®' at the: sod wall. King Abbey and Blue Hall were on terms at the last fence, Avith North Inch and Ostennan- handy. Blue Hall did best in the run in, and beat King Abbey by two lengths. Ostennan was three lentghs away third, and North Inch was the only other to finish. The Nippy-Le Choucas combination carried just on. £2OOO in the Winter Cup) the next best supported being Sun up (£1500), KilbronsyCh and Civility. Le Choucas Avas actually first to break the line after a. long delay at the barrier. Le Choucas led from War-haven, Sun Up. Civility and Royal Diadem, while Indian Sage was cut right back to last. Running across the top, Sun Uip took charge from Le Choucas, Overdrawn. Nippy and Royal Diadem. Sun Up led into the straight from Overdrawn, Le Choucas, Centrepiece and Nippy. Civility eanic fast on the outside, and Sun Up Avas beaten 100 yards
from home. Civility kept up tier uin, and just failed to reach Le Choucas by three-quarters of -a. length. Nippy, finishing on, a vug a length away third, and Sun Up fourth. Then, in close order, came Pink Note, Warlmven, Centrepiece, Indian Sage and Chickwheat.
Sli-me (£2000) was a good favourite for the concluding event, with Paddou, John Bradbury and I'/a-jry Herald next in request. Mime began best. but Pad-don soon ran. past and: led across the ton from Solfello, ltoyal Head and Slime, with John Bradbury 11 1 the tail of the He hi. Paddou led. into the straight, and Slime, John Bradbury and: Sol-fedlo joined issue in a wcriinmago, out of wli’ich Slime- got the best of it. He had 110 c-liance of reaching Pad-don, which won on the; ih.it by two lengths. Slime heat John Bradbury by n. bead, with Jubilant fourth. and Coch-y-Bomlhu. Solfello and Ascetic next.
