PALMERSTON N., July 31. \ Standard reporter who yesterday visited the Hooded area around Rangiotu found many setters who had been washed out of their ,homes clearing a wav the silt left by .the Hood waters In other eases, the houses were still Hooded and untenable. The stationmaster's residence was bedy flooded, for the water reached the level ot the inniitlepiecc in. the dining-room. the wallpapers were ruined, and. everything was coated with much W lien the. "waters .nose the .furntuir© was raised as high as possible to avoid damage. Other houses on the main drain" road were: flooded. It was at this point that the Manawatu uvei broke,' its banks. . Tfco water rushed ever tlie land, meeting the flood water from the Oroua river, which also broke over its banks and caused all farms m this vicinity to be compelte'y inundated. . , , The land is n-ow clear of water, but is cove,red with .silt. The problem ot how to Set food for the shock 'is most serious. On Dixon’s property pigs and sheep were lost, and the- stock is still marooned on the higher portions cf the property, which is still badly Heeded. In many places cattle may be .seen, sheltering on high ground. Altogether the loss is expected to be terious; hut it cannot lie ascertained till the land is clear of water, winch is slowly receding.
