With 16 injured aboard, and her superstructure damaged, the liner Orizaba, of New York, limped into port this l evening. The damage was sustained while battling in the hurricane from Monday night to 'Wednesday morning when .standing bv the steamer Ansaldo San Giogio Secwndo. The Orizaba stood by the disabled Italian vessel, but could, not manoeuvre close enough to pick up the lifeboats which the crew of the 1 latter managed to launch. The American freighter West Hftshaw finally rescued the Ansaltlo’s men. The Orizaba’s 1 cargo shifted in Monday night, ,andi at one tim e the vessel listed at an angle of 45 degrees, the third-class quarters being flooded. A later message from Nassau states that over 150 are believed to have l been drowned, and damage conservatively estimated at 18,000,000 dollars done, and over 75 boats sunk or destroyed Mi Monday and Tuesday in the worst hurricane ever -recorded in the Bahamas. Many families ana homeless' and public utilities are paralysed. Nassau has abandoned her efforts to alleviate her own distress, and: will despatch all availabe craft to the- famous Bahamas sponge beds, for which nearv 200 small sloops and schooners left on Friday. The majority of the missing are members of the sponge crews.

Outside the islands were eight large rum-runners laden with a cargo of liquor, the amount of which cannot be estimated. These were l hurled: on to the beaches and smashed to pieces.
