PERSONAL ITEMS.

Dr. B. A. Porritt, the new house surgeon appointed to Hawera Public Hospital, arrived in Hawera last evening, and will commence duty as from the beginning of the week.

Mr and Mrs Braanwell and d'aoighter, of Feilding, arrived in Hawera •last evening, and are guests at' the Central Hotel. Mr Hurst Gardiner, who is connected with the British Imperial Oil Company, 1 woked at the Central Hotel, on Thursday, and left Hawera again this morning.

Mr F. J. Crawford, buyer for the New Zealand' Bacon and Meat Packing Company, who is being transferred from Eltliam to Hawera-, expects to take up residence here about- the middle of August. Mr C. Gostelow, lately Deputy-Com-missioner. Actuary and Secretary of the Government Insurance Department, has been appointed Government Actuary (states a Wellington Press Association message). At the monthly meeting of the Hawerni School Committee last evening, ai motion of sympathy was passed with Mr F. S. Baker in the double loss, by death of his mother and father, both bereavements having been sustained during the month. The. late Mr F. H. Symons, whose death was announced l -recently, was born at Makapawa, in the Sounds, near Havelock South. He was the son of Mr William Morshead Symons, and a, grandson of Mr James Symons, who arrived from Cornwall with his wife and family in the -ship Aurora in 1840. Mr J. Symons was one of the New Zealand Company, and at one time owned that part of Wellington now known as Brooklyn-. Mr F. Symons settled with his parents at To. Roti, where he lived until a short time after his marriage. At the age of between 16 and 17 years- he invented and built with his own hands entirely a seed cleaning machine, which be patented and with which he was most successful. After lxis marriage he sold his machines and -went in for farming. Six years ago, for the sake of the health of his family, -he- settled in Hanvke’s Bay. His death was due to complications following a broken thigh.
