THE SMILE CASTLE

A CORNER ESPECIALLY FOR CHILDREN.

THE CASTLE PLEDGE. I promise to smile every time I can, and to chase all the frowns into the dark cave, where the Smile Giant will kill them with his Magic Sword Happiness.

Dear Children, lam feeling quite pleased with you to-night. I see you like word-building, for some have sent in their lists already. The rest must, reach me by Tuesday. You see we have decked our Castle Hall with yellow and green, for to-night's our party to the sweet young .Spring Queen. My fairies brought you here early to-night, so that you could all be made ready for the party. In a minute each one of you will be given his party costume. Our little dressmakers have been so busy, our tiny mice have supplied sharp needles from their whiskers, the spiders have given us silken thread, and we have sowed and stitched, and cut out and fitted and matched colours—and, Oh! We have been so busy. And everyone’s clothes will tit. While you have slept we have silently spied round your rooms and have taken the measurements of your garments. We know the styles which suited you best. Doth boys and girls have been provided for. Here you are. Oh, Marjorie, Doris, Mary! .Jack, Harry, Tom—everyone! You do look fine. You see, some boys look best dressed as grass, others as trees, shrubs and hedges, and some as birds. Ho! Ho! you cheeky' sparrow! I believe the cat would think you were real. And the "girls. Who could tell you were not really violets, primroses, daffodils, narcissi, jonquils, irises, buttercups, snowdrops, daphne, and all the other beautiful flowers which awaken to greet Spring? To-night she comes. These are the colours she loves and for many months past our dressmaking fairies have nearly sewn their fingers off preparing pretty new dresses for the flowers and trees. The drosses have been taken to all the plants, who will begin to wear them from to-morrow. Some have been impatient and have already tried theirs on. _ To our Smile children who are sick, and cannot be here to-night, we are sending a dream picture of to-night's festive hall, and wo hope they may have some sweet flowers to cheer them up. Perhaps those who have been here to-night will tell the others about our happy evening, of the games we played, the songs we sang. That will make ever so many more smiles for, YOUR SMILE QUEEN.

BIRTHDAY GREETINGS.

Many Hapn v Returns to — Phyllis Harding, (6) on August 1 Bernard Willis, (10) on August 4 Lester Foy, (14) on August G.
