CLEANING SHACKLE PINS.
It occasionally happens (says a southern contemporary), especially when grease-cup lubrication is employed, that a shackle-pin gets clogged up.with dirt, or solidified grease. Taking out the pin is usually a tedious business, and can be avoided in most cases by first removing the grease-cup and then taking a twist-drill which will pass easily through the hole. This should be pushed in, twisted round, and withdrawn. The dirt will be collected in the grooves, and the drill should be cleaned and the operation repeated until all foreign mater is removed. Thin oil or paraffin should next be forced through the hole so as to clean the small hole at the end leading to the outside of tin; pin. When the whole system is clear, fresh grease should be forced through. The softer kind of grease, used in grease-guns, is the least likely to solidify.
