PRISONERS SENTENCED AT CHRISTCHURCH. (by TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, July 23. At the Supreme Court the undermentioned prisoners were sentenced : John Ronald Lynch (21), for burglary at Ashburton, reformative treatment for three years; Sydney Smith, for burglary at Ellesmere, two years’ imprisonment and to be again declared an habitual criminal; Edgar Henry Miller, a letter carrier, for theft of chewing gum from a mail bag, was given probation for one year. YOUTH Fofß| BORSTAL, INSTITUTE. CHRISTCHURCH, July 23. In sentencing Selwyn. Baker (17) to two years’ in the Borstal institute on five charges of indecent assault, Judge Adiamisi said that it was his duty to protect young girls from 'men who bad not .sufficient control. Counsel pleaded that the acts were the result of ignorance. ALLEGED FALSE INCOAIE .TAX RETURN. AVELLINIGTON, July 23. On resumption, Air T'udhop© said he proposed, with the consent of the other side, to take, the charges together. The charges were alternative, but counsel contended that the defendant must have known the returns were; false. He proposed to ask for a, conviction on th© first charge in each case. ALLEGED FALSE INCOME RETURNS. WELLINGTON, July 23. Charles Ca/inperdown Odlim was charged at the Magistrate’s; Court, with wilfully or negligently making false returns 'as to his" income -.for the years ending March 31, 1922-25 (inclusive). C. A. Odlin’s timber and -hardware company wa.s charged with wilfully making* f alse returns' for the years ending -September 30, 1921-24 (inclusive). Odlin- -was further charged with wilfully mailing false -returns in respect of the income of the company for the years ending September 30, 1921-24, and also with .aiding and! abetting the company to miake false returns. All- O’Leary, for Odlin, Paid he was not orepared, at the moment, to go on with the personal charges.' All" Alacassey, for the Crown, objected. _ The magistrate said be thought that the cases would have to he taken in their order. Air O’Leary wa.s granted a concession of an hour.
