MEREMERE.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

Very sincere regret is fe-lt in the' district at the death of an old resident, in the person of Airs W. Williams. The deceased lady was probably on© of the first to arrive in the district-, having lived here over 40 years, and consequently endured much of the hardships attendant to the pioneer’s life. Airs Williams was of a retiring disposition, yob made many friends, whose sympathy will be extended to her 'Sorrowing family'. The funeral took place on Tuesday, and was largely attended. Our local school was a- very successful competitor at the recent Winter Show, securing several prizes, perhaps the most meritorious being that of Aluriel Wallace in the essay' class. The subject selected was “Home Life.” The school has been paid rather .a nice compliment by the receipt of a letter from two young ladies at the present time touring New Zealand. They have been: intimately associated with the school systems in the United States and Canada, and asked to be allowed to send the large nature charts exhibited at the show, and drawn by Aluriel Wallace, Gordon Iverrisk and Ron Lichtwark, home to their schools. They considered them to be of most original design and of great educational value. Tlie.v also promised to a;sk the schools to whom they will he forwarded 1 to communicate with the donors of the work and express their opinions. This should be a further step in the inauguration of “The. school children’s Empire reciprocal publicity scheme.” The teachers and -scholars have generously permitted the young ladies to take possession of the charts. The annual school concert was held in the hall on Friday last, and, although the weather was threatening, there was a- good attendance. The items were contributed 1 -by the school children. _ The proceeds will be devoted to repairing tennis racquets, to .football, and generally to keeping the sports equipment in repair. A lot of tennis is played by the- pupils, three beautiful courts being available in the school grounds. Not to he outdone by the larger centres, where generally the local press prints the programmes for sale in the ha-11, the childen have instituted a system of making their own programmes, which they ©old. There was an absence of -nervousness on the part of the -scholars. The nrogrn.mme was as follows: Song, “Lilly Dillv.” scholars; medley, primers; song, “My Uncle lobosophat” ; recitation. “Vespers,” C. Davison; song, “The Nut Tree,” Shirley Kerrisk; game, “Aly

Mother Said,” primer girls; song, “Billy Boy,” Ruby Townsend; game, ‘‘Harry Works,” .primer boys; song, “A Foolish Goat”; playette, .nursery rhymes; recitation, ‘'Going to. Grandma’s” ; song, ''Fly, Tittle Children , recitation, ‘‘Lone Dog,” W. McNa,light; playette, “IT nolo loms Cabin”; song. “Oh, I’se Tired”; recitation, “The Reach,” Lyn Williams; song, “Let the Great Big World ; play-ette. <k llohiii Ho-oct* ’ ; moiiisenso school; game,' “Rucker Up and Whistle”; playette, “Aunt dob.son” ; song, “Sleepy Town. At. the conclusion, of the concert, Mr G. Williams, chairman of the school committee, thanked the scholars' for tlie very nice entertainment they had provided, and also thanked the teacher, Mi'S Anthony, for the arduous work of preparing them. Mi* Miller, the new storekeeper, wlm lias' purchased Mi* Gardiner’s business, presented l a large box of chocolates for distribution amongst the children! after the concert. He was accorded) a vote of thanks.
