A WORTHY SETTLER.

AIR- D. P. F. AIALONE’S RECORD

(From Our Kaponga Correspondent.) Consequent upon a breakdown in health Air. D. P. F. Alalone, of “Lloverlea,” Kaponga, was compelled, at the latter end or May, to disperse entirely the fine pedigree Jersey herd that has made his reputation as a successful breeder famous far bey-ond the connnes of his own district, it is not necessary' to recount the show ring and saleyard, achievements of Air. Alaione’s highly-bred stock, but it may not be out of place to give a short resume of his past activities in the public interest. In the eye of Kaponga and surrounding districts Air. Alalone has always been a live wire (.though not dangerous), and this quality, combined with a quiet, unassuming manner, has made him one of the most popular settlers in tnis neighbourhood. It is usually the rule to postpone indefinitely recording a citizen's worth, but in this instance the. subject merits the exception. Air. Alalone's spheres of usefulness to the community have been so varied and numerous and spread over such a lengthy period that it is a dilficuit matter to determine the jump-ing-oif place.

With. Air. A. H. Guy, the subject of this article was practically the founder of tne flourishing Kaponga Jersey Club; vice-president in 1924, president m 1925, and present president and member of Stratford Jersey Club’s executive for the past six years. His connection with Jerseys includes nine years in the forefront, of Taranaki'pedigree breeding. Always with an eye to his own and fellow dairy farmers’; interests, Air. Alalone lias never stinted time and labour in factory- management, as for nine consecutive years he held a seat on the directorate of the Kaponga Dairy Company, from which position he resigned. For the past five years he lias been (and still is) a director of the T. L. Joll Dairy Company-. In 1918 and 1919 Air. Alalone was president of the Riverlea branch of the Farmers’ Union.

In the realm of clean, healthy- sports he has .for a number of years been quite as prominent a figure as in the more serious walks of life, for in addition to being an active member of the Kaponga Football Club for several seasons he was a selector of the junior team for two years and sole selector of the seniors in 1920 and 1921. He was also president of the club for two years, and at various times occupied a seat on the committee of management Perhaps Air. Alaione’s most cherished alliance with athletic sport lies, in his connection with the Kaponga Athletic Club, which in 1920 was revived after several years of quiescence. He was one of the prime movers for the resuscitation of the club and for the institution of the now great annual seven-a-sicle Rugby tournament. The infection of Air. (Alaione’s "enthusiasm was contracted by Air. A. O Casey, of Eltham (then resident- in Kaponga), who presented the handsome shield now in annual competition. For their joint activities in this direction Alessrs Malone and Casey were unanimously elected honorary life members of the club —an honour conferred on, and held by, these two gentlemen alone. Mr. Alalone always refers to the latter distinction with an excusable touch of pride, as from its once dead state he and Mr. Casey made the initial moves to raise the athletic club and attendant tournament to its-present altitude. The best wishes of all Kaponga have gone with Air. Alalone on a healthrecruiting tour, and the hope is expressed that he will return fully restored in health and l able to pick up the thread ends of his busy life.
