Mr. A. E. Neilson lias been appointed secretary to the New Zealand Rugby Union. Mr. P. H. HartJand. acting: district traffic manager for the Wanganui 'railway disitritit, is at present visiting Hawera on departmental matters. Mr A. E. King, w former resident of Kaponga for a period of 21 years, now of Okoroiro, is visiting the Winter Show.

Mr. W. A. Yeitch (Wanganui) will be the National Party representative on the New Zealand Parliamentary delegation to visit Australia in September for the Empire Parliamentary Association’s conference, states a Press Association message from Wellington. At the annual meeting of the Pig Breeders’ Association in Hawcra yesterday, a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the secretary, Mr M. C. Crighton, who, the president said, had done great service to the association. The motion was carried with acclamation.

The Canterbury College Board of Governors decided at its last meeting that leave of absence should be granted to Mr P. G. Bamford, testing engineer for the mechanical department of the School of Engineering as from August 31, 1926, until the end of the 1927 session, to enable him to take a course in advanced metallography at the Sheffield University. Mr Bamford is a Hawera boy. The death of Mr J. W. Hughes at liis residence at Papaita, on the Wanganui river, on Tuesday, has removed another old settler. The deceased was a. well-known farmer in the Wanganui and Waitotara districts, where he was held in the highest esteem. From boyhood he was closely associated with farming pursuits, his father having been: one of the most successful stock breeders in Wanganui in the ’sixties and ’seventies of last century. For a number of year's Mr Hughes resided in Waverley, later removing to Max well town. Deceased was for many years an officer of the Wairoa. Light Horse. He removed to Papaiti five or six years ago, and was later on elected a member of the Waitotara Conntv Council.
