PROSPECTS OF INDUSTRY
(by TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) W.EiL LUNG TON, June 30. The annual, conference of the fruitgrowers’ Federation has opened. Mr. O. Brash, occupied the chair. There was a. good uttend'ance of delegates from ail.l parts: of the Dominion. The Hon. 01.O 1 . J. Hawken, addressing the conference, said that he believed New Zealand was going to be a great fruit-growing country. U,p to the piesent growers had Iliad rather an unhappy time, it had taken a long time to establish the, industry, but it looked with regard to the export trade that business from now on would be, on a better footing. The Government would continue its assistance, but lie did not know how much: it was going to cost. Hie hoped it would not. wind up with too march, of a loss. He thought those engaged in: ,suoli industries. pa,rtioularly fruit-growing, were worthy of support from the State. An increase in production meant ail -increase in the weailibh, of the nation. iHe hoped the Fuitgrowers’ Board would be able to cut down marketing expenses. The Government hacl not discussed the guarantee but he thought- it, would Wave to help the industry.
