KAPUNI (24) v. MANAIA (19)
(From O'ur Kapuni Correspondent.) The Manaia school Rugby team visited Kapuni on Saturday iand Avere defeated' by the home boys by 24 points' to' 19 in ai good exhibition of the code, Avhich found both teams fully extended. Playing Avith the advantage on the sun and wind, Kapuni made the pace' at the outset and 'by half-time had run up a tally of 17 points, comprising tries by D. Gulliver and L. Hodge (both converted by Hodge), a penalty goal by Hodge' and la field goal.by W. Whalen. Manaia improved during (the second spell, and Ibuib tor the loav tackling of their opponents and the splendid line kicking of W. Whalen and A. Walker, Kapuni must have suffered defeat. Tries by Borrie, EdAvard's ,and T. Robinson '(2), a conversion each by Toroa and Edwards, and a penalty goal by Toroa gave Manaia 19 points, to' Avhich Kapuni replied Avith a further field goal by W. Whalen and a goal front a. mark by A. Walker, making the final tallies: Kapuni 24, Manaia 19. Walker's goal Avas a gem from the side-line, 40 yards out. Mr. Ernie 'Scott was the referee.
For the winners it would be difficult to pick out any special, forward, although T. Sullivan played a great game ably assisted by B. Shaw, D. Gulliver and Herdlmian. In the backs Dug. Walker Avas once again the outstanding player, getting the ball away and backing up his backs times out of number. W .Whalen and L. Hlodge were a tower of isitnength to Ivapuni. Their goal and line kicking would do a senior team credit, but the latter should remember he bias a. centre-three-quarter and two Aving-three-quarters behind him. In the first spell, Avben the light Kapuni pack AA'ere hooking the ball and Dug. Walker avhs getting it out to his backs, Hodge lost several opportunities by hanging on, too long. Sherlock, at full, was very 'Safe, his line-kicking and fielding being. A’ery good. For the Manaia team, T. Robinson, Edwards, and Toroa. played sterling games for their sides. Bernie McKay, Willcox and O. Walker, .showed up well, but the latter is inclined to kick too much when near the lane.
