MILITARY BALL.

SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION. \ The scarlet mess uniforms of the permanent staff officers, khaki uniforms of officers and men, the steel blue of the Royal Air Force, all blended with the wide and varied hues of the ball dresses of the ladies in a brilliant colour scheme at the first annual ball of Queen Alexandra’s AYellington and West Coast Second Alounted Rifles Regiment, which is at present in camp at the Egmont A. and P. Showgrounds. The ball, which was held in the Winter Show Hall last evening, was an unqualified success. There was a very large attendance, over 150 couples being present, and the accommodation of the dance room was taxed to the utmost, an enjoyable evening being spent in dancing to excellent music supplied in the first half by the regimental band, and in the second half by a special orchestra from the band. The ball opened with the grand march, which was led by LieUt.-Colonel AY. R. Foley and Aliss' Corrigam followed hv Lieut.-Colonel J. H. AY byte with Airs. AlcCaskill, Lieut.-Colonel Sutherland and Airs. King, Lieut. G. M t AlcCaskill and Mrs. Bayly, Captain Harvey and Aliss Rogers, and dancing was continued until an early hour this morning. Seoond-Lieuten-L. D. Hickford and C. R. Alayer capably fulfilled the duties of Al’s.C. A special grant of 60 per cent, of leave allowed a, large number of men in camp to attend the ball, and they appeared very smart in their khaki uniforms.

Towards the close, Lieut.-Colonel Foley expressed his thanks to the public for their liberal patronage, and extended thanks to the AA 7 omen’s National Reserve for assistance, and to McCormick and Go. for the loan of furnishings. The catering was in’ the hands of the Savoy, and an excellent supper was provided. For the use of non-dancers a card-room was provided, a privilege much appreciated.
